You never know !!!

This week I had the pleasure of learning sooooo much about what it means to be in poverty, and homeless! I guess this is what inspired me to reach out to a guy that I have known for sometime but just because he always stands at the same spot in the morning at our school holding the door for our students to enter. Mr. Eats. is what the student giggle and call him because they always see him eating everything lol. At first , I was concerned that we had a homeless person that close to the school, however as the years progressed I never seen or heard anything happening, and the kids love him so much. I had a conversations this week with Mr. Edley and I asked him could he tell me how he got to that stage of his life. Mr. Edley explained that he was beat by his father his entire life ,and his mom never did anything to stop him. Once, he got into age he told his mom the next time he was beat he would leave and never come back. Well, the next time Mr. Edley was beat and his mother just stood and watch it happen strike after strike. That night as he heard his father beat his mother, he escaped into the backyard, into the woods, and he kept going until he couldn't go anymore and that is how it all happen. From 17 years of age, he has went from place to place. No one looked for him , and at that age he started hanging with the wrong crowd and the problem slowly took over him. He tried to get back on his feet, but after a drug addiction, criminal record, nothing could bring him back to normal. I asked him why does he stand and open the doors years later at this school, he said so parents can tell their kids at a young age "don't  turn out to be like Mr. Edley"! This hurt me to hear, but reality kicked in that our generation is slipping and a example like this could prove a point. I admire Mr. Eats  because he has got a job as our custodian and they now call him Mr,Edley ! LOVEEEEE ITTTTTT

Reflection : The World Forum

This week we kicked off the semester with viewing a website that stood as an international foundation The World Forum, that brought different early childhood professions together to listen to their testimonials about working with children. Two of the educators stood out the most to me was  Mrs.Airam    Dr. Stan

From Mrs. Airam I learned that her passion came from her being able to see everything that she taught her children "come to life". I can admire this because it is a great feeling when you see your students applying what they have learned. She also stated that "her students taught her just as she taught them", and this took me awhile to get but I too have learned some important messages. I have learned that I need to be gently on my words , because you never know what a child is going through and this school , and in my classroom might be the only place in which they feel safe!

From Dr. Stan I was able to really connect with him about the importance of having men in the school system. Dr. Stan stated that "men are portrayed as not accepted in the school system", which is a true statement. Yet, it is time to change that viewpoint, and start encouraging men to be more involved in the school system. Dr. Stan made a good point that we have to more inviting ourselves such as holding different events to get the men to volunteer.

Overall, it was refreshing to hear and connect with other educators around the world, and I will definitely be back to check in with more of the podcasts.

Connections to Play

-This quote sums up a true definition of what “play” means to me! I remember as a kid playing outside all day. I remember waking up and waiting for my cousins to be dropped off and we would spend the entire day outside, and my great grandparents would be on the porch. It is sad to say that play isn’t the same as it was back when I was 5 years old, not sad to say technology has taken over!
-This quote means that Play should be freedom from rules and structure. The kids should not have to play a certain way. My daughter has tons of toys, yet it is amazing to see what her minds come up with a box, or the conversation she has with her toys. “Let me Play”, kids need play doesn’t matter where or the time or the materials just let them play, and watch their mind explore.
Who didn’t have one of these???? This car went everywhere!!! Nowadays kids have powerwheels, this cart you had to push on your own!!!
Cabbage dolls and it is amazing because 29 years later and I still have this exact same doll. If I was to bring this to my class today all the kids would laugh, because it compares to nothing that they dolls are today such as American Dolls. The scent from the cabbage doll was amazing and mine has the same scent still.
